Negotiate a better courier deal

From February 18 to March 16 of this year, postal workers on the Isle of Man will be issued ballot papers to vote on the future of the conditions at the company. More than 250 employees at the Isle of Man Post Office (IMPO) will be encouraged by the Communication Workers Union (CWU) to dispute their salaries. Since the postal company has chosen not to go to arbitration, the CWU has taken steps to organize this ballot. It will be the first of its kind in the history of the IMPO.

A CWU official, Terry Pullinger, is heading up negotiations with the IMPO, and argues that his organization has done everything possible to avoid a strike. The CWU argues that the postal courier companies  are seeing rises in its profits, and hard-working postal delivery people deserve a pay rise. Despite multiple attempts to negotiate higher wages for workers, the IMPO has consistently refused to make any changes.
The IMPO acts apart from the central government, only receiving funding from local government departments on the Isle of Man. The union argues that the profits that the company has seen are down to the hard work of dedicated employees within the company. As a result, it is only fair that they should see some of the profits, and receive their share of the success.

The company stated that it was disappointed by the CWU’s plan to issues ballots to workers, claiming that the Island is not currently in a good fiscal position to be supplying wage increases. The IMPO argues that all parts of the economy are dealing with this financial strain, and the post office is also feeling the effects. The company wishes to act responsibly by balancing budgets well now such that the IMPO can continue its success well into the future.
Managers with the IMPO have also complained that the negotiator at the CWU has failed to recognize the unique relationship that the post office holds with the government, as it differs from systems found within the UK. The company agrees with the call to share profits with its employees, but disputes the plan to provide guaranteed pay increases every year.

The public reaction to these pay talks on the Isle of Man has largely been negative, and has upset many working within the business. The IMPO now hopes that the employees understand the full range of economic forces in this situation, and realise the unfeasibility of the proposed pay increases. They also hope that this understanding will be shown in the results of the ballot.
